The Reality of Backpacker Jobs in Australia

Most backpackers get screwed over at some point. These aren't scare tactics—these are official stats from Fair Work and Scamwatch.

78% of farm workers are underpaid
$9.7M lost to job scams in 2024
7% of Fair Work cases are backpackers (yet we're only 1% of workers)
43% increase in wage theft complaints in 2024

Don't be a statistic. Check reviews before you commit, and help others by sharing your experience—whether it's good or bad.

The Good News? Plenty of Employers Get It Right.

Not every farm is dodgy. Not every hostel is a nightmare. There are brilliant employers out there who pay fairly, treat backpackers with respect, and create amazing experiences.

When you find one, shout about it. Leave a review and help them get the recognition they deserve. Plus, the more good reviews we have, the easier it is for everyone to find fair work.

Why This Exists

Quick origin story. I'm Jay. I packed my life up, travelled from Melbourne to Perth, and showed up ready to graft. But the promised 40+ hours turned out to be closer to 15—barely enough to cover rent and groceries, let alone save for the next adventure.

So I did what any rational person would do: sulked for a day, then used the spare time to build this site. Because to this day I still hear backpackers say "someone should make a review site for these jobs!"

Well, welcome to the future. Use it, leave a review, and help the next person avoid the same heartache.

What's the minimum wage in Australia?

As of 2025, the national minimum wage is $24.10/hour. Most casual workers also get an additional 25% loading, so that's $30.13/hour total. Some industries have different award rates though—check Fair Work Ombudsman for specifics.

What if I'm being underpaid or experiencing wage theft right now?

Call Fair Work Ombudsman: 13 13 94. Keep records of everything. Wage theft is a crime now, so they take it seriously. Also leave a review so other backpackers know what's happening.
